free speech first amendment ron paul republican party grassroots demonstration police california highway patrol freeway
Description: California Highway Patrol forces Ron Paul supporters to stop demonstration over California freeway. EDIT: Just to clarify, they were standing on a sidewalk holding a sign for passing cars to see. There is no local ordinance against it; the city police had already been notified and didn't have a problem with the demonstration. The highway patrol admitted he had to protect free speech, but decided - despite the fact that there were government signs posted directly next to the Ron Paul signs - that cars might be distracted by having a sign displayed too near, so he ordered them to leave. This is why the one man was upset. |

| walt1776tilinfinity ::: Favorites 2007-12-17 23:44:28 The CHP is in the wrong! The Constitution is very straight-foward. Congress shall make no law prohibiting or abridging the freedom of speech; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble. | citybear1388 ::: Favorites 2007-12-17 03:07:20 I agree with mitochondria. We cant alienate people, regardless of whether they are trying to stop us. The point is that we are respresenting something much bigger than ourselves, and when we start treating others as criminals like they are treating us, it leaves a sour taste. Respect must be given always, even when it is not given by others. __________________________________________________ | |

| memelito ::: Favorites 2007-12-17 01:49:01 California use to be a Free speech State. It saddens me to see it become a communist state. __________________________________________________ | |
| mitochondria09 ::: Favorites 2007-12-17 01:40:05 I'm a Ron Paul meetup group organizer and work over 30hrs a week for this great cause. Standing above a busy freeway could cause an accident due to distraction. I would have handled the situation differently and left in good standing. Yes, those bridges are wonderful but I'm sure you can find a busy intersection near a mall at this time of the year. You guys have the name of the officer. How about writing an apology and let's continue to spread the message of freedom, peace, and prosperity. __________________________________________________ | |
