| mitaro ::: Favorites 2008-01-03 02:57:22 Hi Tom Thanks for the reply, i know people are passionate about Youtube and i also know they really care about the Community. But at the end of the day it does not matter how Youtube make money, its none of our business. Its up to them how they make money, and they will live or die by those decisions. If people are getting upset/angry then they have a choice to make. I think there is room for everyone. Happy New Year All :) __________________________________________________ | |

| tlg847 ::: Favorites 2007-12-22 13:20:02 Thanks for these thoughtful suggestions, nrgins. I'll pass them along to the powers! Happy Holidays. __________________________________________________ | |
| tlg847 ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 15:12:23 Well, I'm going to consider that a considerable compliment! 8^) Thanks. __________________________________________________ | |
| nrgins ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 14:49:56 [Part 3] So I guess what I'm proposing is a merging of the main page with the categories, perhaps where there is a dropdown or whatever by the Featured Videos, where you can get different sets of featured videos. And whatever set you last selected could be your default set when you return. Anyway, the main point is that the front page needs to evolve to reflect what the site currently is, not the one-size-fits-all product it used to be. __________________________________________________ | |
| nrgins ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 14:49:33 [Part 2] So, frankly, I think YouTube needs to adapt the front page from a "one size fits all" model to something more multi-faceted. I could see tabs at the top with various sections, and a person could go to the section they want -- whether home-spun and vlogging; or big media; or how-to; or whatever. Now, granted, we already have the categories on the Videos tab. But who uses that as a main source? (continued) __________________________________________________ | |
| nrgins ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 14:49:02 Tom, Here's a thought I had about what I mentioned about "new tools" to fit the community. YouTube started a single-celled organism, to stretch a metaphor a bit. It was home video makers posting home videos. Then it evolved into all the things it is today. Yet we still have a single front page with a single list. Check out funnyordie(.)com. You'll see on the right they have several lists, from several editors. I think that's great. | hayseedsings ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 13:30:43 Nah... The money he makes from YouTube hardly matters to him. __________________________________________________ | |
| divalolo ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 10:08:26 Window dressing, my considerable a*se! You're the thinking woman's tottie, Tom. ;) __________________________________________________ | |
| divalolo ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 10:05:58 I love NWM's self-expression but sometimes he reminds me of a 'displaying' silverback gorilla, beating his chest and throwing branches about. :) __________________________________________________ | |
| tlg847 ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 09:37:59 The tools YT uses and the ones we've been given are not yet adequate to the vision, as you so aptly put it, that they "sowed in us." Unfulfilled promises are the worst. Thanks. __________________________________________________ | |
| divalolo ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 08:55:27 (3 of 3) 3. The expectation that YT sowed in us (to do things differently, to create a new way for people to connect) remains unfulfilled. Tools: we have many voices, YT has few. And, as kenerg suggests, we can speak with our feet if it comes to that. Are these sufficiently differentiated from the master's tools?? Cheers. __________________________________________________ | |
| divalolo ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 08:48:52 (2 of 2) Of course a lot of people are upset and wondering whither "the Community": 1. Those of us that want to make a difference and be a part of the change you describe have been thwarted by the powers that be within YT; 2. YT has yet to institute an efficient process for 2-way communication. Sometimes it feels like we are shouting into a hole in the ground, and we have no idea really what is going on within YT and their values/goals are sketchy; (oops, more...) __________________________________________________ | |
| tlg847 ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 08:06:41 You got it. In a word, which had now become cliche, authentic. __________________________________________________ | |
| divalolo ::: Favorites 2007-12-21 08:02:12 "They're up close": Tom, any more 'up close' and I'll be able to read the to-do list behind you!! Seriously, this was a challenging video to do for you I think. What you mean by "solidity" to me means, the videographer has no hidden agenda; or if they do, it's still visible to us. A slick media whiz product has an agenda or motive that can't be "read" like a person can. Am I getting it?? (1 of 2: gotta go pick up my son) __________________________________________________ | |
